Apartamento ONDINA

PORTUGUES

ENGLISH

Located in the city of Porto Alegre, the southernmost state capital of Brazil, this 66sqm apartment originally had a compartmented 2-bedroom layout which we converted into a 1-bed. The original layout was not suitable for the young couple with no kids, that acquired it as their first home after marriage. Therefore they required it to be updated to their needs.

Our strategy was to rethink the internal divisions boosting up the living spaces. For that, we created a fully integrated open space – kitchen, dining, living and barbecue areas – that took advantage of the great solar radiation and the amazing views.

The main move was the incorporation of one of the bedrooms to living space to create a dedicated space to work from home. We designed a home office table which is fiscally connected to the dining table. This massive table adds up to six meters in total length. Adjoined to this table, dividing the two different activities, a black cabinet keeps the work material – such as papers, books, and computers – hidden. And from the opposite side hides the kitchen refrigerator and functions as storage for the laundry room. On the main living space area, below the window that overlooks the lake Guaiba, an oversized made-to-fit fireplace in local natural Balsato stone can also operate as an auxiliary barbecue counter. Facing the sofa and the barbecue place, we designed a 5.6 meters long sideboard which serves as a TV stand, a minibar and a reading notch (that resembles a small bay-window).

The suite now has an increased area resulted from the incorporation of the old circulation between the bedrooms and the reduction of one of the bathrooms. This area allowed us to create a walk-through closet. The reduced bathroom was transformed into a powder room/ toilet, so guest that come for dinner does not need to access the intimate area.

The project’s material palette comprises the natural Brazilian woods such as the Garapeira wood – covering all floors but the wet areas and the Cumaru wood – in the dining/ office table and in the elongated sideboard. To create contrast black and grey finishes were selected on other made-to-fit and to the loose furniture. Finally, we added a subtle pitch of colour at the kitchen backsplash using a contemporary mosaic of tiles.
